Short Story: Footsteps

Footsteps

Delphine always wanted to pilot her father’s plane and when he forgot his keys on her tenth birthday, she knew that taking off would be easy. She’d flown enough with her father to know how to gain adequate speed and when to pull back on the yoke becoming airborne. Piece of cake, she thought and off she went.

She was over the river when her father’s calm voice floated from the radio. Delphine smiled. He’d only asked her how the flying was, then talked her safety back to a smooth landing at the private airport. Instead of punishment, her father informed her it was time for flying lessons.

Her father retired, but she’d followed in his footsteps, flying planes… jet planes. Engines whining, she saluted her plane captain, and Lieutenant Delphine Monroe’s F-18 Hornet catapulted off the aircraft carrier deck. Piece of cake.

    1. I love watching planes take off from carriers. I noted earlier that one of my closest friends was in the Navy. She wasn’t a pilot, but she did get to ride back set once… best thrill of her life she says. So glad you enjoyed. See you next week!!!

  1. I think Dad dealt with the situation the right way. Like others, I really enjoyed the transition to today – Dad must be so proud of her! The repetition of ‘piece of cake’ is great, it shows she still has the same playful attitude when it comes to flying. Great stuff 🙂

  2. Nice! I like the way her father accepted her interest and fostered it. It was great to watch her grow and eventually fly one of the greatest planes in the world. I really enjoyed this.

    1. I really appreciate your comment. I mentioned in another reply I wrote this for my very good friend who was in the Navy and always wanted to fly. Her father was in the Navy as well, but not as a pilot. I will definitely agree with you… the F-18 is one magnificent plane! So pleased you enjoyed this!

  3. Wow, this is a good way of telling the story. So real and still exciting. Shows how good the relationship between parent and child was. Well done!
